Full Description

A scattered area of possible Second World War weapons pits, or early modern extractive pits, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s to the east of Moreton Pit, Crossways. The earthworks comprise nine groups of three or four small pits and at least four isolated pits. The measure between 2 m and 6 m in diameter and are visible over an area measuring approximately 290 m by 405 m. (1-2) The features are now under tree cover (3) but could not be seen on lidar imagery. (4) This feature was digitally plotted as part of the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
