Full Description

A cliff-face working for shale, identified by Legg (1), who shows it as 'cut in cliff'. The OS 1st edn 25in map (1889) (2) shows a cutting in the cliff top approaching the site from the west, which Legg identifies as the remains of the route of a tramway constructed by the Bituminous Shale Co in 1848 (MDO32454).
