Summary

A public park alongside the Bourne stream in central Bournemouth shown on the 1st epoch Ordnance Survey map, where it is described as 'Pleasure Grounds'. This park was later extended to become the public gardens which now extend for about three kilometres from the sea along the Bourne Stream.

Full Description

The OS 2nd edn 25in map (1898) (1) shows the open space on either side of the course of the Bourne stream laid out with paths and trees, and with features such as public conveniences, a bandstand and fountains. It was marked 'Pleasure Grounds'. The Upper, Central and Lower Pleasure Gardens now extend along the Bourne for about 3km and are a Grade II* Registered Park and Garden (NHLE1000724).
