Full Description
The OS 2nd edn 25in map (1898) (1) shows a narrow, straight track aligned roughly N-S and approximately 470m long, confined between the extensive grounds of a house named Wentworth Lodge to the W and an area of open lawns and planting to the E possibly associated with a house to the N named Stourfield. The track provided access between the developing area of terraced housing at Pokesdown and the coastal cliffs to the S. The 3rd edn map (1909) (2) named the track as Fisherman's Walk and showed it linking with an engineered zig-zag path down the coastal cliff to the shore, constructed in the period since the 2nd edition. The path and access to the beach are likely to have been part of the new leisure and recreation facilities associated with the development of the coastal area at this period.
