Full Description

An area of probable post medieval gravel extraction at Little Pamphill is visible on current Lidar imagery (2).

The features comprise two large and irregular depressions either side of a trackway/road recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, linking between Vine Hill and Cowgrove Road (3). To the east of the track is an elliptical depression approximately 175m long by up to 105m wide; this feature is recorded as 'Old gravel pit' on the OS 1st Edition map (3). On the west side of the track is a further irregular depression approximately 126m long by up to 85m wide. This feature is not visible on the OS 1st Edition map, although it does show two small irregular enclosure to the north which may also be associated with post medieval extraction (3).

The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

‘Gravel pits at Little Pamphill … Either side of the track leading from Little Pamphill cottages downslope to the Vine Inn the ground is uneven indicating earthwork remains of gravel pits. William Woodward’s plan of 1774 (D/BKL) shows irregular pecked lines here, presumably depicting the gravel workings as they appeared at that time.’
