Full Description

‘BISHOP’S CAUNDLE (ST696132) Building works in the centre of the village were visited in November 1985. On the street frontage, opposite the church, topsoil stripping had disturbed a dense scatter of building rubble. No building is shown here on OS 1:2500 1st edn. A few metres to the north a shallow pit with a damp, peaty fill was noted in a foundation trench section. A few unstratified medieval and post-medieval sherds were found.
About 100 m to the north-east the builder had observed a boundary ditch, whose depth was estimated at 4-5 ft. This ditch was open, and wet in places. He also reported that a geological surveyor had found evidence of a filled ditch in the same area. There were no associated artefacts. Near to the north end of the open ditch a well was found and sealed with concrete. This is probably the well whose position is imprecisely marked on OS 1:2500 1st edn.
I am grateful to Messrs Alford Bros. Ltd., the builders, for giving access to the site, and for discussion details with me.‘
