Full Description

Early C20 formal garden on site of C17 garden, 1ha. Walled kitchen garden to north and north east, probably C17 origins. Approach drive of 600m to forecourt from south-south east, laid out c.1912, with gate piers and gates 80m distant from the manor, and a bridge (probably C18) over the Winterbourne, 20m distant. The gates may be C18, re-set. The main garden areas are dictated by evidence of C17 garden walls and buildings; and the early C20 gardens are thought to have followed the C17 layout. <1>

Arts and Crafts style gardens laid out between 1909 and July 1913 by Mrs Gordon Gratrix within the framework of a 17th century garden. Further work took place after 1915. <2>
