‘OBSERVATIONS ON A PIPELINE IN THE VALE OF MARSHWOOD … A series of low earthworks were visible across the field close to Berne Farm (SY 394 944), the site of a former Manor House, later the seat of Sir George Somers, founder of the colony of Bermuda in the late 16th-early 17th centuries. Two raided, roughly parallel ridges aligned north-south from the southern field boundary ran towards the area of Berne Farm and may represent the line of a former track between it and Berne Cottage. Associated with these appeared to be a low ‘terrace’ in the west-facing slope of the small knoll in the east corner of the field.’
