Summary

A plough-levelled round barrow visible as a well defined circular annular cropmark on aerial photographs dated 2005. One of two conjoined monuments. It is circa 18 metres in diameter, and appears to intersect with a curving lynchet (the latter presumably being later). It is also immediately adjacent to another plough-levelled round barrow.

Full Description

Two small barrows on Oakley Down (SU 0117), on the west side of the road towards Woodyates were excavated by Colt Hoare circa 1800. One contained a disturbed interment and the other a cremation with some large-headed nails in a cist. Neither barrow is numbered in the description, but Grinsell though the second barrow might be No 27 on Hoare's plan (SU 01 NW 18).

The Royal Commission could not identify either of them with any of the barrows in this area. <1-3>

A plough-levelled round barrow visible as a well defined circular annular cropmark with an estimated diameter of 16 metres, visible on aerial photographs dated 2005. No mound material or internal features could be discerned. This monument is conjoined at its eastern extent with another similar round barrow, and both lie in immediate proximity to a sinuous NNE-SSW aligned linear feature or landform ,which is in itself undated.
