Monument record MDO381 - Bowl barrow east of Red Barn, Bradford Peverell

Two bowl barrows situated east of Red Barn. The more northerly ('A') is 60ft diameter and 3ft high and the second, 25 yards to the south east, is 34ft diameter and 1 1/2ft high. (2)

'A' - A ditchless bowl barrow, 12.0m diameter and 0.5m high, under grass and stubble with many flints exposed. <3>

This barrow was 11 paces in diameter and 1.5 feet in height. <4>

'B': SY 64299219. A flint and earth bowl barrow spread to a diameter of approximately 17.0 metres and 0.3 metres high. In arable. 'B'. Surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <6>

Two bowl barrows situated east of Red Barn. In a report published in 1952 both were noted as earthworks. The more northerly barrow had a diameter of 18.2 metres and a height of 0.9 metres. The second, situated 22.8 metres to the southeast, had a diameter of 10.3 metres and height of 0.45 metres. However a field survey of 1954 recorded the barrow at SY 64319221was 'destroyed' - ploughed out, its site indicated by a 20 metres in diameter surface scatter of chalk and flint . No surface finds were recorded. This barrow was scheduled in 1977.A field survey which took place in 1981 noted that the ploughed out barrow was visible as a chalk patch approximately 18 metres in diameter. This was visible on Ordnance Survey aerial photographs of 1979 with a ditch indicated by a 3 metre wide band of dark soil. The bowl barrow at SY 64299219 survived as an earthwork approximately 17metres in diameter and 0.3 metres high. NRHE AP (OS 79/123/292 15.9.79)
