Full Description

A series of slightly curvilinear banks to the east of Spring House, Broadwindsor, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1). The banks are located within a wider enclosure of probable medieval origin, potetnially an area of former medieval open field. The banks may represent historic lynchets, potentially of medieval origin, although a later date is possible. Alternatively they may represent an area of former medieval strip field. The banks appear to extend beyond a ditched historic field boundary (MDO38999) aligned east to west, which is not shown on the OS 1st Edition map but appears disused on an aerial photograph of 1947 (1). The site is not visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (2). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
