Full Description
Clay pit with brickworks and two kilns marked on the 1st epoch Ordnance Survey map [1]. Features comprising an irregular area of disturbed ground containing two linear banked earthworks and the remains of a small rectilinear structure are visible on 1940s aerial photographs [2]. The structure corresponds with the location of one of the documented kilns, one of the linear banks broadly corresponds with the footprint of one of a pair of long rectilinear buildings recorded on the OS 1st Edition map and altered/demolished by the time of the OS 2nd Edition map [3]. The 2nd Edition map also shows an extension of the clay pit/extractive area to the north, still visible on an aerial photograph dated 1947 [2]. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project. The features are now under modern housing development.
