Listed Building record MDO39253 - Manor Cottage, Preston Road, Preston, Weymouth

A house built in the 17th century as a cross-passage house set end-on to the road. The walls of the building are of rubble and it has a thatched roof. Surviving features of the interior are reported to include timber partitions and doorways, and a large stone fireplace with bread oven. In the 1930s the house was restored by the architect Walmsley Lewis. John Wesley’s grandfather is reputed to have lived in this house.

‘(307) MANOR COTTAGE, 160 yds. N.W. of the church, is a rectangular building of 17th-century date built at right angles to the street; it has been much altered but retains the following original features: on the E. side, a three-light window with recessed chamfered mullions and a moulded label; internally, at the S. end, a reset fireplace with flat stone lintel and chamfered jambs with broach stops. Some stop-chamfered ceiling beams and two reset four-centred timber door-heads also remain.’
