Full Description
<1> AC archaeology, 1992, Dorchester Ring Main 1992: Post-Excavation Research Design, Site 608 (Unpublished document). SDO9463.
‘Site 608: (SY 6781989498) Maiden Castle Farm. Approximately 90 metres to the north of Maiden Castle Road, a complex arrangement of filled in post-alignments and boundary/enclosure ditches were revealed. The presence of substantial archaeological deposits in the vicinity are well documented as part of the Maiden Castle Farm Late Iron Age/Romano-British settlement. The revealed sequence consisted of an initial phase of post holes presumably representing an ancient field boundary, supplanted by a small ditch about 0.9 metres deep, which in turn was cut by a larger replacement ditch to the north. The larger ditch was over 2.5 metres wide and more than 1.2 metres deep, its base extended beyond the excavated depth of the pipe trench. A number of sherds of Late Iron Age/Romano-British pottery were recovered from this feature.’
