Full Description
A ditched linear feature on the northwest edge of the Knowlton Barrow Group is visible as a cropmark on 1990s aerial photographs (1 and 2).
The linear is aligned northwest to southeast and runs along the top of an earlier banked earthwork (see MDO40064). The feature is on the same alignment as a series of other ditched linears that appear to represent a field system of Iron Age or Romano-British origin (MDO40066) that post-dates the Knowlton Barrow group. This linear may form part of that field system but it also aapears to correspond with a historic trackway leading east towards the former Charlton Dairy Farm, both shown on the OS 1st Edition map. It is therefore possible that this ditched linear is also a section of historic trackway leading towards the North Circle.
The feature also shows clearly on a 2014 aerial photograph (3) and was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
