Monument record MDO40572 - Historic field boundaries, South Bockhampton, Burton

Ditched and banked linear features to the northwest of South Bockhampton are visible on 1940s and 1950s aerial photographs. The features are presumed to be historic field boundaries of probable post medieval date, although an earlier origin is possible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Ditched and banked linear features to the northwest of South Bockhampton are visible on 1940s (RAF 1946) and 1950s (Ordnance Survey 1957) aerial photographs. A ditched linear to the north of the main group is visible on current Lidar imagery (Environment Agency 2015).

The features are narrow and rectilinear in form and appear to align with and sub-divide historic enclosures of regular rectilinear character, present on the OS 1st Edition map (4). Some of the historic enclosures also have more curvilinear boundaries, indicating a possible medieval origin, with the more regular boundaries possibly indicating post medieval sub-division. The features are presumed also to be historic field boundaries of probable post medieval date, although an earlier origin is possible.

The features are no longer visible on current Google Earth imagery. Theywere digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
