Full Description
Ditched linear features to the southeast of Wimborne Minster are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features comprise narrow rectilinear ditches running perpendicular to both sides of a single slightly irregular ditched linear on a southeast to northwest axis. The shorter linears are arranged broadly parallel to each other, save for two on a more diagonal alignment. The OS 1st Edition map records a partial field boundary at the southeast end of the long linear (2). The features are presumed to be part of a post-medieval drainage system, which may incorporate a historic field boundary of probable post medieval date, although an earlier origin for this possible. The more diagonally positioned linear features may also alternatively be sections of historic field boundary of probable post medieval date.
The features are still within open fields, although under tree cover, on current Google Earth imagery and are no longer visible. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
