Monument record MDO4066 - Lynchets, Brookman's Valley, Iwerne Minster

Strip lynchets within old enclosures are recorded on both sides of Brookman's Valley. The record for this monument has been enhanced with support from Wessex Water.

Several medieval type contour strip lynchets, up to 10m wide and circa 3.0m high lie on either side of Brookman's Valley. At the head of the combe on the south side, three low and wide banks descend into the combe dividing the ground into rectangular blocks. <5>

'(14) CULTIVATION REMAINS. The last fragments of the former open fields of Iwerne Minster, then divided into two fields known as Town and Poly Fields, were enclosed in 1848 (Enclosure Map and Award, D.C.R.O.); they lay respectively N.E., and S. of the village. The strip lynchets on both sides of Brookman's Valley (around 876142) lay within old enclosures. Strip lynchets on the N. side of Preston Hill (868136) are the remains of cultivation associated with the mediaeval settlement of Preston'.
