Full Description

Ditched and banked linear and curvilinear features in fields to the southeast of High Hall are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1 and 2).

The features comprise two linear and parallel banked features aligned south to north and 265m apart. A short narrow and angled section of rectilinear ditch overlies the easternmost banked linear at its north end; this feature corresponds with a row of trees recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (3). The westernmost banked linear is potentially broken by the insertion of a later scarped curvilinear bank, possibly a post medieval or early modern landscape or garden feature (MDO40860).

A curvilinear ditch runs along the east side of the westernmost of the two banked linears, continuing south where it curves east to meet a historic field boundary that continues the curve round to the north where it meets with another rectilinear historic field boundary that continues on a south to north axis between the two banked linear features and parallel with these.

The features are presumed to be historic field boundaries of possible medieval date, although a later origin for some is also possible, whilst some features clearly overlie and therefore presumably post-date others.

The site is still open fields on current Google Earth imagery and the features are faintly visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
