Full Description

The linear ditches of an extensive post medieval drainage system to the west of Pilford are visible on aerial photographs (1).

The interlinking ditches extend across a number of irregular historic enclosures recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2). Two central linears on southeast to northwest axiis may dually funtion as field boundaries; their line is marked by loosely dispersed trees on the 1st Edition map (2). Shorter linear ditches offset these at intervals and at various angles. Additional interlinking linear ditches are visible to the northeast. All the linear ditches link in to a system of larger curvilinear drainage channels, also recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2).

The site is still fields on current Google Earth imagery and the predominant features are still visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
