Monument record MDO40926 - Possible post medieval field boundaries and trackways, Uddens Park, Holt

Please read our .

Summary

Banked and ditched rectilinear features to the east of Uddens House are visible in 1940s aerial photographs. The features may be trackways and field boundaries associated with the post medieval mansion house (MDO40924) but may alternatively incorporate early 20th century trackways associated with the World War Two ammunition depot (MDO400923). The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

Banked and ditched rectilinear features to the east of Uddens House are visible in 1940s aerial photographs (1).

The features comprise parallel rectilinear banks either side of a possible sub-rectangular enclosure. To the south of these features a long forked ditched linear runs from east to west along the south side of one of the linear banks.

The features may be field boundaries or landscape features of possible post medieval date; presumably part of the grounds of Uddens House. The forked linear ditch is considered more likely to be a trackway, possibly also post medieval in date but perhaps later in origin and associated with the World War Two ammunition depot (MDO400923) rather than the post medieval mansion house (MDO40924).

The site is partly within open ground and partly under woodland on current Google Earth imagery. The features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
