Summary

A sub-oval ditched feature to the west of Hampreston is visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features is considered likely to be a post medieval extractive pit but may alternatively be a post medieval pond or waterhole. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

A sub-oval ditched feature to the west of Hampreston is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).

The feature is 25m long by 14m wide and it is situated adjacent to the north side of a historic field boundary.

The features is considered likely to be a post medieval extractive pit. IT is filled with water in 1946 and may alternatively be a pond or waterhole, perhaps re-using an earlier feature.

The site is still fields on current Google Earth imagery and the feature is still visible as a cropmark. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
