Full Description

Ditched linear features to the northwest of Merley Park are visible on aerial photographs (1).

The features are situated within an area of former open parkland associated with Merley Park, which probably saw phases of enclosure during te medieval and post medieval periods - as indicated by the differing character of internal historic field boundaries recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2).

The features are broadly narrow and rectilinear in form and are considered likely to be historic field boundaries of probable post medieval date, although an earlier origin is possible. The features appear to overlie broader banked linear features visible on current Lidar imagery (MDO41096), suggesting a possible earlier phase of enclosure; potentially medieval or earlier in date.

The site is still fields on current Google Earth imagery. The features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
