Full Description
Banked linear features on Canford Heath are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features comprise a series of narrow rectilinear and curvilinear banks that sub-divide a strip of ground shown as fir plantation on the OS 1 st Edition map but with some dotted linears that could represent former field boundaries or plantation boundaries that define the tree line (2). Apart from one of the linears, which runs on a south-west to northeast axis the features broadly correspond with loosely formed rows of trees indicated on the OS 1st Edition map.
The features may be historic field boundaries of probable post medieval date, although an earlier origin would also be possible. Alternatively they may be that they are plantation or wood banks associated with the fir plantation, again probably post medieval in origin.
The site is still under trees on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
