Full Description
A banked linear feature to the northeast of Hampreston is faintly visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs and as a faint earthwork on current Lidar imagery (1 and 2).
The feature comprises a wide slightly curvilinear bank situated within a large irregular historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map. The boundaries of the enclosure are probably prdominantly medieval in origin and may originally have been part of a larger area of medieval enclosure to the northeast of Hampreston (possibly medieval open field?) that was divided into two at some point during the post medieval period by the western boundary of the enclosure (3). The feature runs broadly southwest to northeast, almost parallel to the western field boundary and potentially overlies earlier banked linear features thought to be possible medieval field boundaries (MDO41281) on a southeast to northwest axis (1).
The feature is considered likely to be a historic field boundary of possible post medieval date, although an earlier origin is also possible.
The feature was digitally plotted from aerial photographs by the Dorset Stour NMP.
