Full Description

Ditched linear features at Longham Bridge are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1-3).

The features comprises sections of rectilinear and curvilinear ditches which feed into a meandering water channel to their northwest, possibly a natural stream but possibly an artificial drainage ditch of post medieval origin; it is recorded on the OS 1st Edition map and is still showing on the current OS mastermap as a drain (4 and 5). Some of the ditches form longer sections of interlinking ditch which feed into a longer common ditch which then also feeds into this larger drainage channel (1-3). The features are presumed to be post medieval drainage ditches, some of which are interlinked to create part of a larger drainage system.

The site is still open field on Google Earth imagery and the feature are still visible. They were digitally plotted from 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
