Monument record MDO41397 - Possible medieval field boundary, West Parley

A ditched linear feature at West Parley is visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The feature may be a historic field boundary of possible medieval date, although a later origin is also possible. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

A ditched linear features at West Parley is visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1 and 2). It is also also faintly visible on a 2002 aerial photograph (3).

The feature is broad and slightly sinuous in character. It corresponds and aligns with adjacent historic field boundaries to the southeast recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, whose similar character and pattern of enclosure suggest a possible medieval origin (4).
The feature may also be a historic field boundary of possible medieval date, although a later origin is possible. The relationship is not completely clear owing to lack of definition but the feature appears to be cut by a later trackway (MDO41399) of probable post medieval to early modern date.

The site is still open fields on current Google Earth imagery and the features is stillvisible. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
