Full Description
A post medieval weir on the River Stour to the southeast of Cowgrove Farm, Pamphill, is visible on aerial photographs (1).
The built structure of the weir is partially visible extending across the river from the southeast corner of Chaw Meadow - where the OS 1st Edition map records the weir as 'Old Weir' (2). A ditched linear feature is visible on the north side of the structure, extending the width of the river; the OS 1st Edition map shows a lane leading to the weir on the south bank of the river and a small spit of land leading to the weir on the north bank. This may be part of the weir structure but may alternatively indicate a fording place; the map records 'old ford' on the southeast bank but the location of this is not clear.
The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
