Full Description

An area of ridged and ditched cultivation marks at Corfe Mullen is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1-2).

The features comprise areas of parallel ridges set approximately 3m apart, with 1m wide ditches in between. The cultivation marks are straight and regular in form and are considered likely to be those of post medieval narrow ridge and furrow. A banked linear feature is also visible on 1940s aerial photographs abutting their northwest side (1-2). The feature is narrow and slightly curv ilinear in form and is presumed to be a historic field boundary, also probably of post medieval date, although an earlier origin is possible. The cultivation marks occupy an area rec orded as rough ground on the OS 1st Edition map, suggesting the cultivation may be due to post medieval intake (3).

The site is under housing on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
