Full Description
An area of post medieval extraction on open heathland to the east of Mount Pleasant, Corfe Mullen is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The area of extraction covers an area approximately 120m long by 70m wide. It is typically shallow surface extraction with some localised deeper pits within this. The OS 1st Edition map records several extensive gravel pits to the southwest (2). It seems likely that the features are also associated with post medieval gravel extraction.
The site is under trees on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible, although some hollows and scarps are visible on current Lidar imagery (3). The features were digitally plotted from 1940s aerial photographs by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
