Full Description
A small post medieval extractive pit on the southwest side of Barrow Hill, Corfe Mullen is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The feature comprises a shallow irregular pit approximately 22.3m long by 15m wide. It is situated on open heathland on the southeast side of a historic trackway recorded on the OS 1st Edition map and adjacent to the northeast side of a probable post medieval field boundary (2). The feature is situated within a wider area of post medieval extraction on the open heathland, predominantly associated with shallow or surface gravel extraction. The feature may also be a post medieval gravel pit.
The site is under trees on current Google Earth imagery and the feature is no longer visible, although it does show faintly still on current Lidar imagery (3). The feature was digitally plotted from 1940s aerial photographs by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
