Summary

A scatter of earthworks is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs on Summerlug Hill, Holt. They were identified as Second World War military trenches and still extant in 1998 when a field visit was undertaken during the Defence of Britain Project. The DofB project established that one of the features had been dug into the Bronze Age round barrow described in MDO5756 although this was not visible on the aerial photographs. The site was digitally plotted during the Dorset Stour NMP.

Full Description

Five trenches, average size 5.0m long x 1.0m wide x 0.8m deep, lie on Summerlug Hill. One has been excavated into the top of a round barrow and the others are aligned approximately E-W on the southern slope of the hill. They are characteristic of military trenches dating to the 1940s. <1-3>
