Full Description
Ditched and banked linear features to the southeast of St Mary's Church, Sturminster Marshall, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1-2).
The features comprise a series of linear and curvilinear ditches situated within irregular historic enclosures recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, whose curvilinear and irregular boundaries are likely to be at least medieval in origin (3). The majority of the features correspond with the historic enclosure boundaries recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, filling in the pattern of historic enclosure. The features are considered likely to be historic field boundaries and trackways of possible medieval date, although a later origin for some features is also possible. Additionally, some linear features may be historic drainage ditches of contemporary date.
The site is still fields on current Google Earth imagery but with much modern boundary changes. The features are still visible in places. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
