Full Description
Banked and ditched linear features to the southeast of Hillbutts are visible on aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1-2).
The features comprise linear and slightly curvilinear banks and ditches that interlink to form a series of partial enclosures within a large irregular historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (3). Several of the linear ditches correspond with loose rows of trees recorded on that map that suggest the lines of removed historic field boundaries. The irregular character of the historic field boundaries at this location suggests a possible medieval date, although a later origin is certainly possible.
The features are considered likely to also be historic field boundaries of possible medieval date, although a later origin for some features is also possible. Some features may alternatively be post medieval drainage ditches.
The site is still open fields on current Google Earth imagery and the features are still visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
