Full Description
Banked and ditched linear features at Pamphill are visible on aerial photographs (1-2).
The features comprise a rectilinear bank and several slightly curvilinear ditches situated within a large irregular historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (3). The banked linear corresponds with a loose rows of trees recorded on that map that suggest the line of a removed historic field boundary. The irregular character of the historic field boundaries at this location suggests a possible medieval origin (3).
The features are considered likely to also be historic field boundaries, possiblY of medieval date, although a later origin for some features is also possible. Some of the ditched linear features may alternatively be post medieval drainage ditches.
The site is still open fields on current Google Earth imagery but with some modern boundary changes. The features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
