Summary

The find of a polished stone axe in AD 1840 is indicated on an Ordnance Survey map. A Neolithic polished greenstone axehead was found around 1840. It was apparently turned up by the spade 'a few chains north of Lophill Farm', though other sources refer to Lob Hill. The axe is now in the British Museum.

Full Description

A stone axe, polished, 5" long, 2" broad, greenstone found in a field called LOB HILL. <1>

A greenstone axe from LANGTON, BLANDFORD in the British Museum. [Possibly applies]. <6>

"Applies to the site where stone axe was turned up by the spade in 1840 ... situated a few chains north of LOPHILL FARM". <3> <7>

The site of this field falls within a grass field. <8>
