Monument record MDO42861 - Post medieval water meadow, Stratton, Sydling St Nicholas

Extensive drainage features are visible as earthworks and structures on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery along the length of Sydling Water to the south of Sydling St Nicholas. The system of drainage channels and sluices link into larger drainage channels recorded on the OS 1st Edition map. The features may be post medieval to modern in date, possibly comprising of post medieval water meadows and later (19thC) watercress beds. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Extensive drainage features are visible as earthworks and structures on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery along the length of Sydling Water to the south of Sydling St Nicholas (1-4). The system of drainage channels and sluices link into larger drainage channels recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (5). Additional rectilinear structures are also visible on the northwest side of the system on 1940s aerial photographs (4). The features may be post medieval to modern in date, possibly incorporating areas of post medieval water meadow and later (19th century?) watercress beds. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Some of the features towards the northern end of the system, closest to Sydling St Nicholas, are no longer visible on current Google Earth imagery.
