Summary

Linear and curvilinear banked features are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs to the west and north of Hill Barn, Lankham Bottom, Cattistock. The features are considered to be part of an extensive Iron Age/Romano-British field system, part of which is recorded under NRHE Hob UID 453018. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Full Description

Centred SY 604966. Pronounced field banks and lynchets forming fields of Iron Age/Romano-British type, situated on the grass-covered north facing slope of a valley.<2>

The field banks are no longer visible in this area of pasture and the lynchets have been smoothed and rounded and are now very poorly defined. <3>

Linear and curvilinear banked features are visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs to the west and north of Hill Barn, Lankham Bottom, Cattistock <1, 4, 5>. The features are considered to be part of an extensive Iron Age/Romano-British field system, part of which is recorded under NRHE Hob UID 453018). On the southern edge, the features may be a continuation of a field system (MDO42979; NRHE Hob UID 453063) on Combe Bottom, Maiden Newton.They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

The majority of features are still visible as earthworks and cropmarks on Google Earth imagery.
