Full Description
A sub-circular ditched feature is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery at Chalkcombe Plantation, Sydling St Nicholas (1, 2). The feature may be an extractive pit, possibly a chalk pit (given the name of the plantation), of probable post medieval date. An irregular earthwork and linking trackway is recorded but not named on the OS 1st Edition map (3); the trackway is visible on the 1947 aerial photograph (1). The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.
The feature is under trees on Google Earth imagery.
