Summary

Human remains were found at the quarry in 1871 during digging for road material. Reports suggest that these were inhumation burials placed in regular close ranks. The burials appear to have been extended and aligned east to west.

Full Description

The Rev H Place (local incumbent from 1778 until his death in 1828) reported that at Gannet Quarry large quantities of human bones were found when it was dug for road material. The inhumations were generally 5 feet to 6 feet beneath the surface, extended in an east to west direction, and placed in regular close ranks. <1>

Gannetts Quarry. "Human remains of the Roman period have also been found in this quary" (the previous entry describes discoveries at Great Down Quarry ST 72 SE 6). <3>

This quarry has been infilled and is now a pasture field. <4>
