Full Description
(ST741156. Thornhill DMV sited to Thornhill Farm from OS 10000 1983)
First recorded in the Assize Rolls as Thornhill in 1244 and probably a 'ring-fence' form when the land was assarted. <1>
'Thornhelle' was held by Uluricus, one of the King's thanes in 1086, and by the Thornhull family in Richard II's reign. Leland refers to it on more than one occasion. The village lay on the old road from Lydlinch to Stalbridge. <2>
