Monument record MDO43912 - Post-medieval fieldscape, Gillingham

Across the site 15 trenches were excavated, of these, seven produced recordable features. These features include a number of drainage ditches from post-medieval or later, a 19th or 20th century field boundary excavated across three of the trenches excavated, two gullies that were undatable, two pits with a quantity of Late Bronze Age pottery and some additional undated features.

The archaeological evaluation of the site consisted of 15 machine dug trenches, all planned to measure 30m x 1.9m. A number of trenches contained evidence of archaeological activity, though the activity was sometimes uncertain in nature or origin. Seven of the 15 trenches contained notable archaeological deposits.
Trench 8; excavated to a depth of 0.45m revealing two pits and a curvilinear gully, small quantities of Late Bronze Age pottery were collected from the formers.
Trench 9; excavated to a maximum depth of 0.45m and revealed two post hole but no datable evidence was collected.
Trench 10; excavated to a maximum depth of 0.4m revealed a ditch believed to be former boundry of post medieval date. A gully was also recorded but no datable evidence was recorded.
Trench 12; excavated to a maximum depth of 0.35m. Four undatable linear features were revealed, some of which are likely to be associated with drainage and of probable post-medieval or later date.
Trench 13; excavated to a maximum depth of 0.4m revealing an undatable feature considered to be a drainage channel and a ditch representing a former boundary of post medieval or later date.
Trench 14; a feature of unknow date or nature were uncovered
Trench 15; a slight earthwork running across the site was recorded as a post-medieval boundary ditch.
Only flint and pottery artefacts were found.
