Full Description
ST 8590 1289 Cross (NR) (Rems of) (NAT). <1>
At the cross roads in the village street, known as 'Shroton Cross', is the socket stone of what was the Village Cross. It is of Ham Hill stone and is very massive, but much worn with indications of convex broaches at the angles. The stump of a shaft, which was fixed in the mortise, was removed about 1856. <2>
The Medieval socket stone measures 0.80m square and 0.55m high, and has a socket 0.35m square and 0.15m deep. The corners are very worn. It rests upon a base of flat stones, and the absence of steps and its position away from the centre of the road, suggest that it may not be in its original position.
