Monument record MDO44898 - Second World War firing range, Blandford Camp, Tarrant Hinton

A group of structures and earthworks on the northwest side of Blandford Camp are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are considered likely to be a firing range of possible Second World War date and were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

A group of structures and earthworks on the northwest side of Blandford Camp are visible on 1940s aerial photographs [1, 2]. The features comprise two crescent-shaped concrete berms or walls with linear banks extending, that may enclose, or may once have enclosed, rhomboid shaped pits, plus some other ancillary rectilinear structures and linear banked earthworks. They are considered likely to be a firing range of possible Second World War date - the site may cut part of a former military railway (MDO4207), which was built and decommissioned by 1919, suggesting it potentially post-dates this.

The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
