Full Description
A Later Prehistoric and / or Roman field system is visible as soilmarks on aerial photographs. The site is centred at ST 9315 0863 and comprises several linear banks and flanking ditches which appear to form a pattern of conjoined but incomplete rectangular enclosures, which are probably fields. The field system extends over an area that measures a maximum of 350m long by 285m wide and is orientated south-west / north-east. It is of the coaxial form often referred to as a "Celtic" field system. The banks measure a maximum of 10m wide and partially define fields that measure circa 30m wide and are orientated WNW / ESE. <1>
Linear banked and ditched features associated with a possible late prehistoric or Roman field system are visible as cropmarks and earthworks to the northeast of Blandford Camp, Tarrant Monkton, on aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery <2, 3>. The features are also recorded under NRHE Hob UID 1480979. They comprise several banked linear boundaries flanked by linear ditches, interlinked to form a series of partial rectilinear enclosures, aligned soputhwest to northeast. At the south western end the features are obscured by/mixed with narrow linear ditches on a north-south alignment that are more likely to form part of a temporary Second World War camp (MDO44876) in this area.
The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
