Full Description
[Listed under CRANBORNE] EDWARD STILLING FLEET, bishop of WORCESTER was born here in 1635 and was "educated at the grammer-school here, under MR GARDEN". <1>
[SU 05451335] T1 is correct. Traditionally, the grammer school was near the butcher's shop in the square. It was burned down in the mid 19th cent. It was a building raised on stilts and beneath it the market was held - shown on NORDEN'S survey of 1605 <1>. The grammar school was sited in the middle of the road according to tradition passed down from my forefathers. We have lived here for 150 years. I looked for foundations when the drains were laid through the site but there were none. <2>
The site is covered by a tarmac road. <3>
