Full Description
A post medieval extractive pit to the north of Boker's Cottage, Lytchett Matravers, is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs [1]. The feature is located within a southwest to northeast running seam of sand, clay and gravels. Some additional pits within the vicinity are documented on the OS 1st Edition map and are variously clay, sand, gravel or chalk pits, reflecting the variable geology of the area. A similar but larger feature on the north side of the railway line (MDO45572) is documented as a sand pit on the OS 1st Edition map. The feature is shown but not named on the OS 2nd and 3rd Edition maps [2, 3]. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project. The feature appears to still survive below trees on 2022 Google Earth imagery [4].
