Full Description

Standing stones on the boundary of Horton are mentioned in a charter of AD 1033, whereby King Cnut granted to Boui 7 hides at "Hortun". The grant includes, roughly speaking, the present parish.

Landmark II - "on Ciddes Beara" - was evidently woodland on the site of Horton Plantation.

Landmark 12 - "on the Haran Stanas" - refers to Hoar Stones which must have been within the area of the plantation (OS 6" 1902 shows Horton Plantation centred at SU 0607). <1>

The area has been mostly cleared of trees, and partly disturbed by gravel workings. No outstanding stones could be found, nor was there any local knowledge of any. <2>
