Summary

The possible site of a Bronze Age round barrow is visible as a cropmark ring ditch with internal mound, on aerial photographs taken in 1995 in the field to the southeast of The Down Buildings, Whitechurch. The site was digitally recorded during the Dorset Middle Stour AI&M Project.

Full Description

Two barrows shown on Tithe Map of 1839 at ST 85700176 and ST 85800173 were not visible on the ground according to Grinsell in 1958. (Also shown on OS 1" 1811).

"Barrows shown on the Tithe Map of 1839 at ST 85700176 and ST 86120135 (presumably an error - see Grinsell) have now been destroyed." Nothing visible on air photographs. <1-3>

A rapid examination of air photography suggests the presence of a round barrow, of Prehistoric or Roman date, visible as a ring ditch cropmark. <4>
