Monument record MDO46287 - Second World War anti-aircraft battery, Warmwell, Crossways

A World War II anti aircraft gun battery identified at the crossroads of the B3390 and the road to West Stafford, near Warmwell. It was constructed in 1940-41 and formed part of the defences to RAF Warmwell. The structure comprised a one and a half inch diameter three-pronged tubular iron gun mount with a 'cotton reel' type fitting on the top to hold the gun. It is positioned in the centre of a 12ft diameter, 4ft deep concave hole in the ground, giving it a 360 degree arc of fire. A field visit in 1996 found the structure to be extant.
